Civil War (2024): A Dystopian Masterpiece

Review by Robbie Fleming

Alex Garland's 2024 film Civil War presents a chilling and realistic scenario of a second American Civil War, centred around a team of war journalists travelling from New York City to Washington, D.C.

Garland’s talent as a writer is evident in the engaging storyline, which features two compelling female characters: Lee, an experienced journalist, and Jessie, an aspiring one. While some elements, like the alliance between Texas and California, may seem ideologically inconsistent, the overall flow of the story and its setting are impeccable.

Alex’s direction brings the narrative close to home, making it feel disturbingly plausible. Rob Hardy’s raw and gritty cinematography enhances this realism, reminiscent of Garland’s work on "28 Days Later." The film’s score and sound design also contribute significantly to its immersive experience.

Kirsten Dunst delivers a solid performance as Lee, showcasing her talent in leading smaller films. Caillee Spaney shines as Jessie, demonstrating her potential to become a future photographer. Supporting roles by Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman are commendable, with Jesse Plemons’ unforgettable cameo deserving special mention.

Overall, Civil War stands out as one of the best films of 2024 and a highlight of Alex Garland’s directorial career. With stellar writing, direction, performances, and technical aspects, this film is a must-watch. I give it 5 stars and a 10/10 rating, highly recommending it to all.
