Dog Man (2025): Another DreamWorks Hit?

Review by Robbie Fleming

Earlier this year, DreamWorks released their latest animated feature: Dog Man, based on the popular children’s book series that exists within the Captain Underpants universe. I finally got around to watching it, and honestly—I had a blast!

Even though I’m not the target audience, Dog Man turned out to be a lot of fun. The story keeps you engaged, and the humor is surprisingly well-balanced, with jokes that land for both kids and adults. Sure, the logic of the world doesn’t always make sense—like how the cats can talk but Dog Man can’t, or how Dog Man's biology even works—but it’s the kind of movie where you can turn your brain off and just enjoy the ride.

The standout aspect for me was the animation. DreamWorks continues its streak of experimenting with unique visual styles, and Dog Man is no exception. While it shares similarities with the Captain Underpants film, this one feels like an upgrade. It's still rooted in 3D animation, but the craft and detail give it a distinctive, handcrafted feel that makes it pop.

Now, I’m not usually a fan of Pete Davidson—something about his constant appearances in big-name projects kind of bugs me—but I have no issues with his voice work here. He actually brings a lot of energy to his villain role. The rest of the voice cast is great too: Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, and Billy Boyd all bring their characters to life with charm. But my favorite voice performance was Ricky Gervais—his signature humor fits the role perfectly, and he really made it his own.

Overall, Dog Man is a well-crafted animated film that’s genuinely fun for the whole family. Between its creative animation, solid story, clever humor, and lively voice acting, it’s easily the best animated movie I’ve seen so far this year… unless the $2 billion Chinese animated hit Ne Zha 2 manages to top it when I get around to watching it.
