Mother's Day Special: Bridget Jones Films RANKED

By Robbie Fleming

With the release of the fourth and final entry in the Bridget Jones film series, it's time to stop and rank all four films from my least favourite to favourite. So, let's get started!

4. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004)

Director: Beeban Kidron

Studio: Universal

Kicking off this list in last place is the second film, The Edge of Reason. While it's great to see these characters return, this just doesn’t function as a coherent film.

The plot is messy, the ending is predictable, and the production values feel quite cheap. The film leans heavily on its soundtrack, changing needle drops almost every time the shot changes, making it feel like the entire movie revolves around its musical choices rather than its story.

That being said, Renée Zellweger gives another strong performance as Bridget, and it's always fun to see the returning cast as their colorful characters. I just wish they had a better story to be part of instead of this disjointed sequel.

3. Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016)

Director: Sharon Maguire

Studio: Universal

In third place is the third film, Bridget Jones’s Baby. I find this much more tolerable than the second film because its story is more straightforward and cohesive. The return of original director Sharon Maguire gives it the feel of a proper sequel, exploring how the characters have changed over time.

Patrick Dempsey and Emma Thompson are great additions to the ensemble, each bringing their own charm to the film. While it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the original, at least it feels like a complete film rather than just a collection of scenes stitched together with a soundtrack.

2. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025)

Director: Michael Morris

Studio: Universal

In second place is the most recent instalment, Mad About the Boy. While I personally find the premise a bit uncomfortable—Bridget’s new love interest is younger than me—I still think this is the strongest sequel.

The cast is great, the direction is solid, and the story flows smoothly. It’s also interesting to see how Bridget’s character has been adapted for the 2020s, and I think she has developed well from the version we knew in the original trilogy. Among all the sequels, this is by far the best follow-up to the first film.

1. Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Director: Sharon Maguire

Studio: Universal

Unsurprisingly, Bridget Jones’s Diary takes the top spot and remains one of the most iconic British rom-coms of the 21st century. Renée Zellweger delivers a brilliant performance, while Colin Firth and Hugh Grant play against type perfectly, adding to the film’s charm.

With its colorful supporting cast, engaging story, and unique visual style, Bridget Jones’s Diary is a must-watch for rom-com fans and lovers of British cinema alike. It stands as one of the most defining British films of this millennium.
