5. My Old Ass
Director: Megan Park
Studio: Amazon / Warner Bros
UK Release Date: September 27, 2024
Kicking off this list is Megan Park’s My Old Ass. This quirky coming-of-age film follows a teenage girl who meets a future version of herself during an acid trip in the woods. The film shines through its clever storytelling, humorous moments, and Aubrey Plaza’s standout performance as the future version of the protagonist. While the humor is very Gen Z, it landed some great chuckles, and Plaza's performance truly elevates the entire film. If you’re looking for a strong coming-of-age film, My Old Ass is one to check out.

4. Blink Twice
Director: Zoe Kravitz
Studio: Amazon / Warner Bros
UK Release Date: August 23, 2024
In fourth place is Blink Twice, a captivating thriller marking the directorial debut of Zoe Kravitz. Starring Channing Tatum and Naomi Ackie, the film centers on two waitresses who are invited to a billionaire's island but soon notice strange things happening. The screenplay draws comparisons to Get Out and Promising Young Woman, and Kravitz’s directing shows a sharp visual style. Despite some disturbing moments, Blink Twice is an engaging thriller well worth watching.

3. The Outrun
Director: Nora Fingscheidt
Studio: StudioCanal
UK Release Date: September 27, 2024
My bronze pick is The Outrun, a powerful character study that follows Rona (played by Saoirse Ronan) as she grapples with her alcoholism, told in a non-chronological order. Ronan delivers one of her finest performances since Lady Bird, bringing emotional depth to the story. The film’s exploration of difficult themes is fascinating, and the cinematography and score further enhance its impact. If you’re a fan of Ronan’s work, The Outrun is a must-watch.

2. Back to Black
Director: Sam Taylor-Johnson
Studio: StudioCanal
UK Release Date: April 12, 2024
In silver place is Back to Black, the Amy Winehouse biopic that stands as one of my personal favorites among this year's musical biopics. Though the screenplay leans into dramatization rather than strict accuracy, Back to Black benefits from the excellent direction by Sam Taylor-Johnson and a remarkable performance by Marisa Abela as Winehouse. Polly Morgan’s cinematography is stunning, and the film has a raw emotional pull that, despite mixed reviews, I couldn’t help but love. It’s an incredibly well-crafted film, and while its emotional depth may fade upon rewatch, it remains a new favorite of mine.

1. The Substance
Director: Coralie Fargeat
Studio: Mubi
UK Release Date: September 20, 2024
And at number 1 (again) is The Substance. As a fan of body horror, this film sets the bar even higher with its exploration of ageism and body image. Demi Moore gives a career-best performance, marking her grand comeback, while Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid also deliver standout performances. The story is compelling both visually and thematically, and Coralie Fargeat’s direction brings it all to life in a visually striking way, reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick’s style. A special mention goes to the hair, makeup, and effects teams for making this film truly unforgettable. If you're into body horror, The Substance is an absolute must-see, showcasing the incredible talent female directors brought us in 2024.
