TRAILER REACTION: Superman (2025)

After the slow and abysmal death of the Snyderverse, it felt as if DC had cast their last die in the Superhero film race. James Gunn (Guardians of The Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker) took the reigns of the struggling studio in October 2022 when the final Snyderverse films were coming out.
But with a new lead comes new hope. I think that line is especially fitting seeing how the first film of the newly established GDCU (Gunn's DCU) is the man who brings hope, is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a dog? No, it's Superman!

Initially I had my doubts. Before the trailer dropped there were leaked photos from the upcoming production showing the costume. It's not the best by any stretch. It has a bulky look and feel to it, almost as if it's padding to make the actor look bigger. The detailing feels out of place but I think that was the filmmaker's intention. To me the costume screams "fancy dress" like the eyesores you see every Halloween.

Depending on the final product, I can live with the costume for now. Hopefully they make some changes when Superman 2 gets greenlit (hopefully not a decade later).
But there's more to the trailer than just the man from Krypton.
Krypto (The Superdog) is a new addition to the film and the bestest boy around. Making his live-action debut, Krypto is a character first introduced in Adventure Comics #210 in March, 1955. Since then he has had numerous adaptations both in comics and on television most recently appearing in DC's League of Super-Pets which came out worldwide in 2022 (voiced unfortunately by Dwayne Johnson) and Scooby Doo! And Krypto too! a direct to video 2023 film.

It is believed that Gunn wanted the inclusion of the Superdog from the very beginning when during the COVID lockdown he and his family adopted a rescue dog. The dog was so disruptive and mischievous that it inspired Gunn to ask "what if my dog had powers".
I see Krypto as a welcome addition to the film and pleased to see him finally get his live-action debut. As a fan of Krypto: The Superdog series (which aired in the 00's) I was surprised to see this little scamp on screen.

I've seen a lot of criticism thrown at Krypto, some claiming it's AI generated (it isn't), other's thinking it's silly to include him (and a man from outer space with magic powers wearing shorts over his costume isn't?). But the haters are always going to hate. It's a truth in this sad world we live in that no matter what you do you'll never truly satisfy everyone (especially the incels who scream "restore the Snyderverse", look it's never gonna happen so either move on or find someone else to idolise. The man's a hack director anyway).

Let's be clear, the trailer gives us only a surface level glimpse into the world, with minimal dialogue and shots out of sequence. We won't truly know what the film will be like until opening day. So right now all we can do is enjoy it for what it is, speculate on what could happen and play the awesome new arrangement of the iconic Williams theme by John Murphy (Sunshine, 28 Days Later).
Overall the trailer looks promising, showing us a look at Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor (who looks so much better in the role than Eisenberg did), Guy Gardner from the Green Lantern Corps, the new Lois Lane played by Rachel Brosnahan as well as much, much more.
It feels like a fresh take on an iconic legendary figure of comic and cinema history. What are your thoughts? Do you agree with our take, do you want to see more trailer reactions? Have your say and become a patron today by going to our donate page!
